All My Children Review: In a tree of poetic souls and transcendental sounds this name is just one of the roots: Common (Sense). What I'll represent to y'all is 'Like Water For Chocolate', the in 2000 under MCA Records released fourth LP of the in Chicago born soul rapper. He's already in the game for such a long time (sixteen years from his first album 'Can I Borrow A Dollar'), but still isn't earning the recognition and respect he should gain so I feel like it's my duty to give him some shine. This is what he does: "I just wanna innovate and stimulate minds Travel the world and penetrate the tides Escape through rhythms in search of peace and wisdom" This album was commercially a considerable breakthrough for Common in comparison to his other LPs. You would think this is because he changed his style of rapping and commercialises his music but you couldn't be further away from the truth. Common represented the same deep, poetic lyrics and soul productions as usual. He's the Truth: "In front of two-inch glass and Arabs I order fries Inspiration when I write, I see my daughter's eyes I'm the truth, across the table from corporate lies Immortalized by the realness I bring to it If revolution had a movie I'd be theme music" Almost every song on the album is produced by the Soulquarians; a collective composed of ?uestlove, Jay Dee, keyboardist James Poyser, and bassist Pino Palladino among numerous other collaborators. The only time the Soulquarians aren't laying the bases of the track is on 'The 6th Sense', a revolutionary masterpiece of music effectuated by the legendary DJ Premier. "The perseverance of a rebel I drop heavier levels It's unseen or heard, a king with words Can't knock the hustle, but I've seen street dreams deferred Dark spots in my mind where the scene occurred" The album commences with a somewhat abstract intro 'Time Travelin' (A Tribute to Fela)' which is the first of two 'Time Travelin'' Parts. The second part is named 'Time Travelin' (Reprise)'; overall the album contains significant afrocentric factors but those are peculiarly revealed on both 'Time Travelin'' songs. Beside those remarkable afrocentric tracks the album also comprises some funky melodies with 'Heat' and 'Funky for You', a retro of the 70's with 'A Film Called (Pimp)', the chill but message-providing 'Nag Champa (Afrodisiac for the World)', the revolutionary '6th Sense', the typical love song with 'The Light', and many more extraordinary tracks. "I'd be lying if I said I didn't want millions More than that money saved I wanna save children Dealin' with alchoholism and afrocentricity A complex man drawn off of simplicity Reality is friskin' me This industry'll make you lose intensity The Common Sense in me remembers the basement I'm Morpheus in this hip-hop Matrix exposing fake shit" So to conclude I can state that Common managed to coalesce instrumental vastness with real, conscious poesy.
